DIY: NATURALLY PAINTED EASTER EGGS

The dyeing of eggs is a long-standing easter custom which is related to the Orthodox tradition. The red colour represents fertility and resurrection. Today I will share a natural way to decorate Easter eggs without using any chemicals.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:

  • 10 eggs
  • some beautifully shaped leaves from your garden
  • "risari" is a root which will give you this natural red colour. You can also use onion leaves. In this case, the eggs will have a dark red-brown colour.
  • a pair of tights

1st Step:
A day before put the root in a pot with cold water and leave it for 6 hours. Then boil it for half an hour and leave it there until the next morning. Skip this step if you use onion leaves

2nd Step:

Firstly, cut your tights in pieces, big enough to cover the eggs. Then, place a wet leave on the egg, hold it with your hand and cover it with the tights. Make sure that the leaf isn't folded! Lastly, tie the tights around the egg tightly!

3rd Step:
Put the eggs in the pot without removing the root. You can use a spoon in order to avoid breaking them. Then boil them for 50 minutes on low heat and they are ready!
If you want to use onion leaves, put the eggs and the onion leaves in the pot altogether and boil them for 45 minutes. After that, you leave them in the pot without removing the onion leaves for other 2 hours.

4th Step:
Take the eggs out of the pot,  cut the tights and remove the leaves. You can polish them using olive oil.

HOW TO PAINT YOUR EGGS USING THREADS:
Another cool and easy way to decorate your eggs is by using special colourful threads you can find in the market.
Instructions:

  1. Cut the threads in small pieces (around 8 cm).
  2. Cut a piece of aluminium foil, long enough to cover the egg.
  3. Put the threads on the aluminium foil and roll the egg on it. Make sure your egg is wet (put it in water before you roll it)
  4. Fold the aluminium foil around the egg and boil it for 20 minutes.
  5. Remove the foil and the threads and polish your eggs using olive oil. Voilà!!!
